F3t

The Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T) is coming to Fort Collins on March 16. I've gone to this show every year, and really enjoy it. They have a great selection of films which make you eager for summer! There is always a blend of trout fishing, salt water fishing, and exotic locations which is perfect for the middle of winter. There are great gear give aways and swag, and the chance to hang out with a couple hundred like minded fly fishers.

Get your tickets at theF3t.com, or at St Peters Fly shop. Get the tickets quick, as the show usually sells out.

BDF will be there...

Winter Fly Tying

Fly tying during the winter is a respite for getting through the dark winter months.  This past weekend, a good friend invited me over to tie some flies.  Dave has the ideal "man cave" set up for tying, and it is a great place to set up the vises and work on filling the fly boxes with favorite patterns.  Fly tying with a friend is a great way to share tying tips, new patterns, and stories from last season's fly fishing trips.  After a productive afternoon of tying, our fly boxes welcomed the addition of bead head nymphs, copper john's, and a secret pattern created by noconympher.

Hit the vises if you have been putting it off.  Warm weather is just around the corner!

Timing

As a youth, I would have been angry.   To fish a stretch of water that I know possesses fish, yet bringing none to hand used to be a difficult lesson.  As the years pass, the patience and appreciation for the experience grows, whether a fish is observed in your net, or not.

Yesterday I returned to a stretch of water that yielded dozens of trout a few weeks ago.  Yesterday, nothing.  As I hiked out of the remote spot, I met two fly fishermen walking towards the water I had just vacated.  The smiles on their faces quickly faded as I informed them of my luck.  One of them stated, "geez, I caught about 50 the other day".  I wished them luck, and told them that it was probably just me.

The thing is...I really do hope they did well.  There are obviously plenty of fish there...I've seen them.  But fly fishing is a daily challenge.  If it was easy, why go?

Fiberglass

Many of you have probably read The Fiberglass Manifesto, which is a blog dedicated to fiberglass fly rods published by my good friend Morty. I've got a couple fiberglass rods in my quiver (thanks to Morty), and enjoy fishing an occasional small stream with the noodley rod. Although I am primarily a graphite rod guy, I appreciate how Morty has opened many eyes to glass in the industry. He did a post on TFM today about his views on the future of glass rods. It is a very interesting read. I especially enjoyed his thoughts on faster actions fiberglass rods. Take a moment to read his post.
